Books
Years ago, I read a book about two-dimensional symmetry . . . I thought, "this would make a neat method of designing patchwork quilts." I was not alone. There have been several books on the market showing just that (I own two of ´em).

I developed my own method to use symmetry, very similar to what I have read. I wrote a class for Quilt University, teaching my method. As part of the class, I drew a set of charts, showing how to arrange four squares with lines drawn through them to make a 4-patch block. The charts showed where to place the top of the square, and where to place mirror-images of the square.

About a year ago, I took another look at my layout charts and made a startling discovery: the 4-patch blocks could be viewed as two pairs of squares placed beside each other, on top of each other, or diagonally from each other. The pairs of squares were either right side up, or upside down. In only one instance (out of 15), were the squares turn sideways. The arrangements I (and the other authors) had used were developed by crystallographers to differentiate crystals they observed in nature. Crystallographers are not necessarily quilters, though. By turning my squares sideways, I had discovered a whole new realm of patterns!!
