Nacho Grandma's Quilts!
DESIGN SYSTEM
HOME
My design system consists of a set of twenty-four squares, or "units", with a single line drawn through them, lettered A through X.

Then, I combine two or more of these units to generate new, increasingly complex units. There are over sixteen million possible combinations of units.

Next, I apply the four operations of symmetry (translation, rotation, reflection, and glide reflection) to the unit. This results in a new 4-patch block. I use a shorthand developed by crystallographers to identify the symmetry.

I currently teach this design system as a class through Quilt University (www.QuiltUniversity.com).

These blocks provide a wealth of patterns. Click on the examples below to see the resulting pattern.
